Hand Cane vs. Machine Cane: Understanding the Conversion Process

At Breuer Chair Company, we pride ourselves on delivering high-quality seating solutions that blend traditional craftsmanship with practical innovation. One area where this is especially evident is in our cane seat offerings.

Understanding Hand Caning

Hand caning is a traditional method of weaving cane by hand, one strand at a time, through holes drilled into the seat frame. This artisanal process is extremely labor-intensive and time-consuming, often taking skilled craftspeople 8-12 hours to complete a single seat.

Brands like Knoll, which offer hand-caned products, reflect this craftsmanship in their pricing. The higher cost is justified by the detailed manual labor and the aesthetic appeal of a hand-woven pattern.

Our Machine Cane Conversion Process

At Breuer Chair Company, we offer a conversion service to switch from hand caning to machine cane, which offers several distinct advantages.

What is Machine Caning?

Machine cane uses pre-woven cane material that is inserted into a groove cut into the seat frame and held in place by a spline. This allows for a visually similar result to hand caning, but with much greater efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Conversion Process Overview:

· We carefully cut a groove into the existing wooden seat frame.

· This groove allows us to insert the pre-woven cane sheet.

· A spline is used to secure the cane in place.

‼️ Disclaimer: This conversion process is permanent. The wood frame is physically altered to accommodate the spline, which means the seat can never be returned to hand-woven cane in the future. It is a one-time modification that makes future cane replacements easier and more cost-effective.

Benefits of Machine Cane

·  Lower Cost: Machine caning is significantly less expensive than hand caning.

· 🎨Color Matching: The machine cane we use closely matches the natural tone of aged cane, making it a great replacement even for older chairs.

· ⏱️ Faster Turnaround: Because the cane is pre-woven, machine cane replacements can be completed much faster than traditional hand caning.

· 🔄 Easy Future Replacement: Once converted, future repairs are quicker and simpler.

Quality You Can Trust

Our seats are made from high-quality solid Italian beech wood, the same wood type used in premium Breuer-style and Bauhaus chairs. The machine cane used in our products is carefully selected to ensure durability, strength, and a natural appearance.

At Breuer Chair Company, we believe in blending tradition with practicality—preserving the beauty of classic design while making it accessible and sustainable for today's needs.
